Located in the northwest of Serres prefecture, Kerkini Lake is one of Greece’s 10 Wetlands of International Importance, recognized under the Ramsar Convention. Over the years, Kerkini has transformed into a crucial habitat for biodiversity, boasting over 300 observed bird species, making it a significant site for birds in Greece and Europe.
Kerkini Lake is also renowned for having Greece’s largest population of water buffalos. The lake is home to diverse fauna, including 11 species of amphibians, 26 species of reptiles, over 58 species of mammals, 30 fish species, more than 800 plant species, and at least 4700 species of invertebrates—some of which are new to science.
This wetland is not only a refuge for local wildlife but also a vital stopover for many migratory birds, making it a key spot for birdwatching in Europe.
