Nestled on the northern slopes of Ali Baba, the Lailias Ski Resort stands as a testament to the ingenuity of the Greek Mountaineering Association of Serres. Lailias offers a unique skiing experience with its illuminated slope, which allows for night skiing amid the serene beauty of the surrounding beech and fir trees.

The resort is equipped with a cozy chalet that features dining facilities, a refreshment bar, dormitory accommodations, and ski schools, making it an ideal destination for both learning and leisure. With three lifts and two slopes, extending over a total length of 1.5 km, Lailias Ski Resort provides a compact but comprehensive skiing experience.

The Roupel Bunker stands as a testament to Greece’s courage and resilience during World War II. The largest of the 21 bunkers along the Greek-Bulgarian border, it played a pivotal role in defending against Nazi forces. Part of the legendary “Metaxas Line”, this fortress boasts an extensive network of shelters stretching 1,849 meters and tunnels spanning 4,251 meters.

Constructed in 1270, the Monastery of Timios Prodromos is a stunning monument of Byzantine art and one of the most beautiful monasteries of Macedonia. Located at the heart of a deep, verdant gorge on Menikio Mountain, approximately 12 kilometers northeast of the city of Serres, the monastery’s main church is built of stone and adorned with numerous Byzantine frescoes.

The Monastery’s celebration takes place on August 29.

Spanning 3,187 meters in length, the Serres racing track covers an area of about 195 hectares. The track’s width starts at 15 meters on the starting straight and reduces to 12 meters across the remaining sections. The track’s gradients vary longitudinally from 1% to 3%, ensuring a challenging race environment. The longest straight, used for starting races, is 662 meters long. The shortest straights, which are situated between the opposite and similar turns, measure 24.61 meters and 8.21 meters respectively.

The circuit boasts 16 turns in total, consisting of 9 right-hand and 7 left-hand curves, with curvature radii ranging between 40 and 100 meters. The track layout includes sequences of up to three consecutive curves going in the same direction, enhancing the technical difficulty. Moreover, the track design incorporates widening on the inside of the curves and a protective graded area on the outer edges to safeguard the competitors.

Located in the northwest of Serres prefecture, Kerkini Lake is one of Greece’s 10 Wetlands of International Importance, recognized under the Ramsar Convention. Over the years, Kerkini has transformed into a crucial habitat for biodiversity, boasting over 300 observed bird species, making it a significant site for birds in Greece and Europe.

Kerkini Lake is also renowned for having Greece’s largest population of water buffalos.The lake is home to diverse fauna, including 11 species of amphibians, 26 species of reptiles, over 58 species of mammals, 30 fish species, more than 800 plant species, and at least 4700 species of invertebrates—some of which are new to science.

This wetland is not only a refuge for local wildlife but also a vital stopover for many migratory birds, making it a key spot for birdwatching in Europe. The mixed bird colonies on its riverine forests and significant numbers of nesting pairs contribute to its ecological importance. Kerkini Lake offers an invaluable experience for nature lovers and environmental enthusiasts visiting the region.

One of the most stunning destinations in Serres is Lake Kerkini, a man-made lake created in 1932 with the construction of the Strymonas dam. Today, it is one of Greece’s most important wetlands, home to a vast number of species and a stopover for many rare birds.

For winter sports enthusiasts, Serres also boasts a ski resort. Be sure to visit Lailias, where you can enjoy the snow, try skiing or snowboarding or simply relax in the warm and cozy chalet and café, offering delicious food and breathtaking views of the landscape.

For those who enjoy combining their trips with visits to archaeological sites, Amphipolis is a must-see. Once one of the most important cities of ancient Macedonia, it boasts a fascinating archaeological site.

The Sidirokastro Thermal Springs are situated in northern Serres, just 7km from the town of Sidirokastro. Renowned for their exceptional facilities, they offer visitors a welcoming and comfortable experience. The hot springs are renowned for their therapeutic properties, offering relief for joint, muscle, and general health conditions.

Operating year-round, the Sidirokastro Thermal Baths attract visitors from across Greece and beyond. In the summer, they are frequented by middle-aged and older guests participating in programs through insurance or public institutions. During winter, younger visitors often seek relaxation and rejuvenation. The springs also serve as a perfect starting point for outdoor activities, such as hiking the area’s scenic trails or visiting nearby attractions like the Roupel bunker and the Byzantine castle.

One of the most remarkable tourist attractions in Eastern Macedonia is the Aggitis River Cave. Located in the municipality of Prosotsani near the village of Piges, the cave is accessible for a length of 500 meters, while its total length exceeds 21 kilometers.

The journey through the cave is mesmerizing, taking visitors along a walkway that winds through stunning stalactites, sometimes above the tranquil river waters and other times above its rushing currents as they flow over a sloping bed. Equally impressive is the river’s dramatic exit through a small arched opening at the base of a vaulted cave chamber, known as the “Hall of the Wheel”. This room spans 40 meters in diameter and reaches a height of 15 meters, once serving as the starting point for speleologists due to its natural entrance.

The cave is also called “Maara”, a name possibly derived from Arabic or Hebrew, meaning “small cave” or “water from the mountain”. The river emerges from the cave and flows through lush vegetation of plane trees, creating a picturesque setting ideal for paddling, picnics or a relaxing retreat at nearby taverns and cafes.

The Aggitis River, the largest tributary of the Strymonas, stretches approximately 50 km and continues its journey through a stunning gorge formed by vertical cliffs, offering breathtaking natural beauty.

The main sections of the cave extend to the right and left of its primary entrance, measuring 60 meters in width, 100 meters in length, and 20–30 meters in height in the initial chamber. This area showcases nature’s most striking beauty, adorned with some of the finest formations in Greece and Europe. As visitors progress, the natural décor becomes even more impressive, featuring delicate white stalactites that form curtain-like shapes.

In the deeper chamber, striking red stalactites, known as “Flames”, reach an impressive height of approximately 35 meters. At this point, the two main halls converge, creating a larger and taller area filled with enormous 15-meter stalactites hanging from the ceiling. The cave also contains countless unexplored levels, adding to its allure and mystery.

In antiquity, Amphipolis flourished as a significant economic, cultural, and politico-military hub, particularly after its annexation into the Kingdom of Macedon. Founded by the Athenians in 437 BC due to its strategic location on the fertile plains watered by the Strymon River, near the mines of Thrace and the gold deposits of Mount Pangaion, the city quickly fell into Spartan hands and was later conquered by Philip II, the father of Alexander the Great.

The archaeological site of Amphipolis is among the most important in Greece, revealing invaluable insights into the lives and customs of its ancient and Byzantine inhabitants. Located within the walled boundaries of the ancient city, its necropolis stretches beyond the fortifications, alongside other ancient sites tied to both the classical and Christian eras of the region.

Excavations have unveiled large sections of the city’s walls, various sanctuaries, and public and private buildings. The city’s prosperity is reflected in its monumental structures adorned with mosaic floors and frescoes. Nearby, famous landmarks such as the Lion of Amphipolis, the Poros Monument, and the Tower of Marmarion further attest to its historical significance.
